Expelled and Rejected

A Girl Without a Home The Orange Lesson Isabelle is expelled from finishing school for impertinence. She is sent back to Paris, where her father reluctantly takes her in. She feels unwanted, a burden. The Exodus When the Germans approach Paris, her father forces her to flee south with strangers. She witnesses the bombing of refugees near Tours. The horror awakens something in her—a desire to fight. Meeting Gaëtan In the chaos, she meets Gaëtan Dubois, a former prisoner. He offers her food and a purpose. She is drawn to his intensity. He leaves her at her sister's house with a note: "You are not ready." This rejection stings but fuels her determination.

First Act of Resistance

Chalking a V The Chalk Isabelle finds a piece of chalk and draws a V for Victory on a Nazi poster. She is caught by Didier, who brings her to a secret meeting of resistance fighters. The Tracts Henri Navarre gives her anti-German tracts to distribute. She agrees without hesitation. This is her first step into the underground. The Risk She hides the tracts in her basket and later in her girdle. She learns to lie, to smile at Germans, to be invisible. The thrill of danger gives her life meaning.

Becoming Juliette Gervaise

A New Identity The Paris Mission Henri sends Isabelle to Paris to become a courier. She forces her father to let her stay. She reopens his bookshop as a cover. The Network She meets Paul Lévy and Anouk. They give her false papers as Juliette Gervaise. She delivers messages and money across France. The First Airman Isabelle finds a downed RAF pilot hiding in a bush. She hides him in her secret room and later delivers him to the network. This act leads to the creation of the Nightingale escape route.

The Nightingale Escape Route

Over the Pyrenees The Plan Isabelle proposes leading downed airmen across the Pyrenees into Spain. Despite the danger, the network agrees. She becomes the Nightingale. First Crossing With Eduardo as guide, she leads four airmen over the mountains. They face freezing rain, exhaustion, and a rickety bridge. She gets them to the British consulate in San Sebastián. Twenty-Seven Crossings Over three years, Isabelle makes twenty-seven crossings, saving 117 men. She becomes legendary. The Gestapo hunts for the Nightingale, but she always eludes them.

Arrest and Torture

The Gestapo's Dungeon The Raid Isabelle is arrested at Madame Babineau's farm. She is taken to Girot and tortured by Rittmeister Schmidt. She refuses to talk for two days. The Refrigerator Schmidt locks her naked in a freezing refrigerator. She nearly dies but holds on. She thinks of Vianne, Gaëtan, and her father. Her Father's Sacrifice Julien Rossignol confesses to being the Nightingale to save her. He is executed by firing squad. Isabelle watches from her cell. His sacrifice gives her the strength to survive.

Ravensbrück and Liberation

The Women's Camp Deportation Isabelle is deported to Ravensbrück concentration camp. She endures starvation, beatings, and forced labor. She meets Micheline again and they support each other. The Death March As the Allies advance, the Nazis force prisoners on a death march. Isabelle is sick with typhus and pneumonia. She nearly gives up, but Micheline keeps her going. Liberation American troops liberate the camp. Isabelle is a skeleton, bald and broken. But she is alive. She returns to Carriveau, where Vianne nurses her back to health.

Reunion with Gaëtan

Love After War The Backyard Isabelle is weak and dying. She sits in the garden at Le Jardin. Gaëtan arrives. He has been searching for her. He tells her he loves her. The Last Kiss Isabelle dies in Gaëtan's arms, surrounded by her family. She is at peace, knowing she was loved and that her life mattered. Legacy Vianne later speaks at a reunion of the Nightingale escape route. She tells Isabelle's story. The Nightingale is remembered as a hero.
